Enjoyed your page. My son just bought a '79 Karmann Convertible Bug today. It is a beauty. Bright red with a white top and interior. CD player and super alarm system for $3000. Low Kelley Blue book is about $3800 and high is $6800. I saw one advertised for $7000. We figuer we could sell it for $5000 easy. Anyway .... do you know where I can find information on this particular model? Also, a friend of mine has a very rare VW flatbed truck called the "La Hormega" (The Ant). They only made these in Mexico for two years. I would like to find info on this also. Any links to Mexico VW sources? I have a '73 Super with 247,000 miles and air conditioning! It is a beauty. This is a great web site!!
I have been lucky enough to own 2 of these great cars. Each was an import from California, converted to right hand drive for legal reasons. (No Cabrios were ever officially imported to Australia). The first was a white 1972 model semi-auto, it was a basket case when purchased, but it was fully restored and won me many show trophies. Sadly parted with it due to arrival of family. I am currently re-building a 1972 manual cabrio in metallic turquoise. I intend to daily drive it. Michael Rochfort - Sydney, Australia.

I have always wanted a VW Beetle and tonight I decided to do some research on the internet and eventually I came across your home page -- I found it to be excellent.
I really don't know where to start - I saw an ad in a local paper for a 72 Superbug that was completely rebuilt in 1992 for 3700 dollars. I don't know if that is a good price or not, but it's a place to start. By the way, what is the difference between a superbug and a bug or are the names interchangeable - Any advice on getting started would be appreciated... First of all I want to thank you for putting out this marvelous web-page on beetle convertibles. I think you have really done a great job.
But I think I am not here to praise you as the new lord of veedubs. Therefore I think I have some real constructive critisism. I own a bug convertible so I really do appreciate a web page for convertibles, but I think I am not alone in saying that most of us do own more than just (a) convertible(s). In my case I own several bugs that do not fit in the convertible section, or is an oval windows with sunroof to be called a convertible - I don't think so. In fact this car is even for sale. So I think you should attach a section to be opened to any VW bug or VW beetle around. I bet a lot of people around would be even more thankful than they are right now. That's enough.
By the way I do have a convertible in (re)construction. The marriage will hopefully be in early spring. If that is the case I'll send you some material... I'll keep reading... Eisi

Just in these moment I have found these web-pages about the living legend on four wheels. For sure, to be in the WWW is a must but to be here so many times is wonderful. In my opinion the beetle is one of the seldom timeless cars. I'm the proud owner of a '71 1302-Cabriolet in well condition. And now we are waiting for the next spring and the summer 1996 in Black Forest, the Swiss and the Elsass.

In spring of 1992 I purchased a 1973 super bettle convert. It was in fair shape but I decided to give it the full treatment (bottom-up) I'm still at it. For those who have been down this road you can relate, that at times you feel like throwing in the towel, but then comes along something to keep the thing going. Well this page really helps the drive to continue. Reading the comments and viewing the info is a great motivator. Last night we got 14 inches of snow and my toy is stored for the winter, but there is hope because she's ready for paint (rosepink) when spring gets here.
I hope to put lots of miles on in the years to come. Thanks!

I have just found your site and although I have not gone through all the items yet, I am excited about finding one devoted exclusively to Cabriolets. If you know where I can find photos of Cabriolets I can download, I am interested. I would like to have as many as possible. I have gone to sparky.oroad.com and have got a few of those, but I have not found a site that has many, other than cartoons which I am not interested in. Give me nice photos of beautiful convertibles and I am a happy man. I will be checking through your site and visiting it on a frequent basis, since I am just about to buy a convertible. I am moving to Aruba at the start of January and I can't think of a nicer place to drive around in a Beetle convertible.

Keep up the good work !! I have just recently passed my driving test and have been given my brothers old car - A BEETLE !! I think he was made to gave her to me, I don't think I'll ever give her up !! She's a 75' sunbug and it's probably the best sounding beetle as I've installed a mutli - play cd system and two sub-woofers in the back and two normal speakers in the front - not surprisingly I alarmed it too !!! Hello, my name is Joe from the San Francisco Bay Area in California. I'm now the proud new owner of a '75 Super Cabrio. I had forgot how much fun it can be to drive a car! This one needs various things fixed on it, and although I'd like to do a full restoration, I can't find a local shop that has anything less than a two-year waiting list! That's how popular the 'ol bug still is here. Really a shame we can't buy some of the new ones from Mexico without going through a lot of expensive retrofit and customs hastles. I've never seen a more comprehensive web-site dealing with Supers as your page has. I have a Super Beetle 1303S in Manila. It was recently restored (not immaculately, though) due to a head-on collision with a taxicab. I particularly liked the 1303 manual and the pictures.

As an 'Ex' owner of one of the beautiful car's I have to congratulate you on this page. I am looking for a picture of a black convertible with grey/silber roof and alloy wheels, 1303 with oilcooler to have as a background on my PC as I used thave this car once. Enjoyed your photos. I'm currently working on a 1969 sedan to convertible project. I'll be removing the car's sedan body and replacinng it with a prefabricated fiberglass convertible body. This should prove to be much more durable in my section of the United States (Connecticut) because the salt used on the roads here in winter really eat up the steel. Thanks for your page. Although my daughter (for whom I am building the car) has already told me she doesn't want it. Fast, na so ganz fertig ist er halt noch nicht, da das Chassis noch abgehoben und umgedreht in der Garage steht und darauf wartet fertig geschweißt und lackiert und zusammengebaut und, und, und zu werden. I am the second owner of a 1976 convertible all stock including the push button am/fm. She has 35,000 miles on her and runs and looks great. Triple white with grey felt and black rubber floor mats. Your web page is nice as is your convertible.

This is very interesting as in South Africa one does not see such fantastic examples is there someone there that can help me with a converstion blue print for converting a beetle to convertable ? I recently became the proud owner of a 1974 convertible. Although I found it in good shape, it has a way to go before I'll let it be a daily driver. I've been reading "How to keep your VW alive," very entertaining. The book already proved its worth when I had to repair the speedometer cable. Next fix is the generator light (never on), then the brake light (on constantly). The brakes are making a slight scrubbing sound, which needs looking after as does the squeaky front wheel bearings. Also, I need to get a cover for my top. I think it will be fun, all things considered.

I found that all of the pictures are very interesting, especially the beetle cabriolets!

I have a 71 convertible SuperBeetle and I just love hitting topic related web-sites. I don't know m any other cars with such a popular support as the Escarabajo, Bubblan, Kafer, or whatever you might want to call it. This cars are 100% history and to say the truth, I'm really happy I own one. I also have a Opel Astra GTi, but to be honest, it does not inspire the same feelings as ABU my VWs name. Bugs are cars that will always be there, plus they are fun to work on. To all those Bug Nuts. Keep those engines roaring, we are making history.

Found your page great! I recently bought a very well used 1968 convertible Beetle. I'm trying to restore it. The upper body is in good shape but the underside has suffered terrible rust. the floor pans have been replace and now I'm takling the "rails" I want to avoid the expense of taking the body off the chassis. A welder has told me he can just weld it to the floor pan side. I know this won't be original. My question is have you ever heard of this being done? Are there other convertible owners that have done this? Again I know its not original but it will save tons of dough. Your e-mail would be appreciated. Looking forward to driving with the top down. Great page. I have a '64 Beetle Conv. that I have had for over 20 years. I would be interested in a technical page, we could share some of the experiences with restoring our drives. I need to replace the heater channels and reinforcment rails, but am really leary.

I filled out a message in the guest book but somehow am now here so I'll do it again. I am considering a purchase of 72 Cabriolet that I understand is show quality. Don't know what a fair price would be. What do you think? I know there are a lot of considerations but what would you pay for a fully restored Cabrio. Also, what do you think of this model yr? I want a reasonably reliable car for some daily driving and do not have the time or knowledge for many repairs or restoration. I have a good mechanic that works on my 1973 Karmann Ghia Coupe. Thanks

I spent quite a while checking it out. It was amazing
I'm a VW lover from way back and have owned several beetles.I currently own two .....a georgous sedan appropriately named "Black Cherry", and a cabrio that is waiting for a much needed restoration.

The sedan is rust-free and I am quite proud of the job I've done on her. She's won many shows throughout the Midwest, including MOFOCO for two years running and Strassenfest in St. Louis two years running. By the way, I own several Bandai models that are in very good condition. I also acquired an interesting item. I'd like to tell you about. It is a metal %28approx. 1%2F12 scale%29 Beetle with rubber tires. It is gold and the entire top hinges back to reveal a whisky bottle in the front seat, and four gold shot glasses in the rear. The interior is a red velour sort of material. The steering wheel is the crank mechanism for a music box that sits under the front deck. It plays "Ack Der Lebre" SP.

It has a sticker that says "Made in Japan". It is in pristine condition and I've never seen anything like it. Do you have any ideas on how old it is or its value? It has American spec towel rack bumpers, so it's obviously pre-67. I found it in an antique store.

Good job on the Owner's Manual. That must have been a lot of work, huh?

I have a '73 superbeetle (with no owner's manual) and I've been trying to figure out the ventilation controls for more than a year now!!! I just about had them figured out, but your '79 manual cleared it up for me. The strangest mystery of all was that little spotlight! I would have never figured out on my own that it was supposed to light the heater levers.

Anyway, Don, you've done some excellent work. Keep it up!

great site!! we have 2 bugs one 79 cabrio w/28K mi. on it and enjoy driving it in the summer in ME. the other one is a 72 fully restored baha commemorative edition that is fun to drive any time its not messy on the roads, no snow and salt. I too can't wait for the new beetles, all of us with real bugs willcount the $$$$$$ in our pockets.

Portugal is full of "awfull" converted Cab-saloons. It´s difficult & expensive to find a nice original Cab (Price range: 11-15 K $US).

Thanks for all of the info and history of the cabriolet. I have driven bugs since I was able to drive.

In fact in the 10th grade when I came out of the locker room from football practice my mother sat on the passenger side of our family beetle. I asked what she was doing and she told me that my learner's permit had come in the mail and I needed to sign it and drive us home.
I bought a 72 Super beetle to drive to college and still have it today. However my dream is to own and drive a VW convertible.
If you can help me accomplish this in any way I would appreciate it. Your web site has revived the process for me. Thank You.

Auch ich bin ein absoluter Cabrio-Fan, speziell hat es mir das 03-Cabrio angetan. Aus diesem Grunde besitze ich auch ein 78`er Exemplar. Ich hatte viele schlaflose Nächte mit diesem Fahrzeug, da ich vor 3 Jahren, als ich den Wagen kaufte, einen absoluten Blender erwarb (der Rahmenkopf war nahezu komplett weg, 3-4 Bleche übereinandergebruzzelt, etc.)
Seit einem Jahr jedoch ist der Wagen wieder fitt wie anno 1978-von den Halteschlaufen über die Holme bis hin zum Rahmenkopf-einfach super!

I think it is really great to install pages for THE BEETLE. I have got a 72th green (Ral türkis-blau) beetle, but I want to built a better one in the next time first I have to collect some money. But now to your sides!!!! It is really intresting how many people are interested in this car (playmobil) and it is nice that erverybody could ask other people in the WORLD if he has a question to rebuild (or something like that) his car. Hi I am President of the VW Cabriolet Owners Club of GB. I found your website and was pleased to see my old car in the gallery! It is the rear view of a metallic blue with a blue cloth hood, ATS wheels and the Type 4 engine. I sold it 2.5 years ago and have recently bought myself another project car - a silver 1976 1303. There is lots to do on it but when it is finished I will send you a photo for your gallery.

Don has the greatest website that I've seen. I've been involved with vw's for 23 years, and this is my favorite site. All those of you who are fortunate enough to own a convertable, or any vw, be very proud. You have in your grasp a piece of automobile history. We do not follow the crowd, we are setting the standard. No other car has had the impact on our century, our popular culture, than the vw. Why do you think they have recreated the beetle in the concept1. Enjoy your cars, drive them, don't leave them in the garage. Long live simplicity, and independance.

great site. Really. I just bought a beetle '78 Cabrio last year. It was for me (from myself) after one year founding my little Software firm.
I'm 22 years old and coming from Mannheim/Germany. Since I was about 3 years old I always loved VW Kaefer (Beetle) and I thought driving each one day since it became true. I searched all over the internet since I got one (in my budget class). I know, that I have to do much things...but when I drive in the sun open...then I only enjoy the feeling...Only 20 days left and I will wake him up from his (winter-)sleep

I found your blog in blog founder site. I found interesting posts , it gave me bit knowledge of cars and other stuff.

I had my birthday at 49 grove last Saturday night. The place was a bit to packed but had a lot of fun. Good looking crowd, great DJ and very strong drinks. A bit too strong for some of my friends, but their light weights. All the staff were really attentive and made a point of taking care of us. When we left the club we even got a thank you from what turned out to be the owner. It wasn’t your usual B.S. “Thank you come again,” either and for that I want to plug this place as a great place for a birthday.

I think that this site is really well-designed. I absolutely love the header design. Very cool. I was able to learn a few things looking at it, which I now want to include in my logo design. Thanks for the ideas.

Last night I went to a great fundraiser at 49 Grove for the Susan G. Komen’s Race For The Cure Breast Cancer Charity. The weather sucked and only 100 or so people showed but the place was really high end and nice. Much nicer then I expected a fundraiser to be. Little touches like pink roses all over the place, scented candles, mints with the pink breast cancer awareness ribbon on them, even the staff had pink ribbons on. The only thing that I didn’t like about the place was the location, West Village and we live uptown and that there was no food at the event.

Nice post, cool cars, cool stuff overall.

Enjoyed your page. My son just bought a '79 Karmann Convertible Bug today. It is a beauty. Bright red with a white top and interior. CD player and super alarm system for $3000. Low Kelley Blue book is about $3800 and high is $6800. I saw one advertised for $7000. We figuer we could sell it for $5000 easy. Anyway .... do you know where I can find information on this particular model? Also, a friend of mine has a very rare VW flatbed truck called the "La Hormega" (The Ant). They only made these in Mexico for two years. I would like to find info on this also. Any links to Mexico VW sources? I have a '73 Super with 247,000 miles and air conditioning! It is a beauty. I'm a member of the Tucson Volkswagen club. Bye for now.
