Note: I write up driving impressions of virtually every car I photograph, within a couple of days of the drive, so everything is fresh in my memory. Occasionally, because of the constraints of format (i.e., buyer’s guide), the prepared text doesn’t run. Now, thanks to the joys of the blogosphere, it can.
Sit inside, and the door sills come up to your shoulders; for what is ostensibly a small car, it’s got plenty of room. The warm colors – terracotta and cream – help brighten things up considerably. The seats put you in place, but offer no additional lateral support. The single standard gauge, the speedometer, is slightly unnerving – it’s big and legible, but shouldn’t there be something else to look at? – though the clear red shift indicator markings double as a tachometer. The only other gauge in the cabin is the optional electric six-volt gas gauge.

Machen wir uns nichts vor: Mit Vernunft hat der Besitz eines Cabrios nichts zu tun. Viele dieser Autos sind eng, unbequem und haben schon mit dem Verstauen einer Wasserkiste Probleme. Aber sie machen Spaß, viel Spaß. Am meisten, wenn die Sonne scheint und das Verdeck in der Versenkung verschwunden ist. Dann wird Fortbewegung wieder zum Genuß, beschauliches Touren über einsame Landstraßen bekommt einen ganz anderen Stellenwert als in einer komplett verlöteten Dose.

Na klar rostet alte Liebe. Besonders wenn sie aus Blech ist und mehr als 25 Jahre auf dem Buckel hat - wie etwa das VW Käfer Cabriolet. Für das Kultmobil gibt es aber Hoffnung: Ein Betrieb im bayerischen Reichertshofen verpasst dem Oldie eine Generalüberholung, nach der das Auto wie neu dasteht.
Käfer Cabrio: Ein Oldie, der von Grund auf renoviert wird
Am 10. Januar 1980 lief bei Karmann in Osnabrück der letzte offene Käfer vom Band. Exakt 331.847 der Kult-Cabrios mit der charakteristischen Verdeckkrempe im Nacken wurden gebaut, und mit dem frisch erwachten Interesse an so genannten Youngtimern rollt auch das Käfer Cabrio ganz vorne mit im Retro-Konvoi. Zwar hat VW mit dem New Beetle Cabrio inzwischen den modernen Nachfolger des urigen Vorgängers im Angebot, doch für Fans oder Nostalgiker kommt nur das Original in Frage. Das Problem dabei: Allein auf Grund ihres Alters haben die Autos Macken und im Vergleich zu modernen Fahrzeugen technische Defizite.

Im oberbayerischen Reichertshofen verhilft Georg Memminger dem Käfer Cabrio zum zweiten Leben.
Die Liebe schläft in hohen Regalen. Dicht an dicht geschichtet drängen sich, mattgrau, Türen, Hauben und Kotflügel, Bodenplatten und Seitenteile. Dazwischen glänzt Messing und Chrom. In anderen Fächern schlummern, eingerollt wie Schlangen, schimmernde Leitungen neben Stoßdämpfern und schmalen Felgen, Kleinteile stapeln sich in Kartons und irgendwo, weit hinten in der weitläufigen Halle, wartet ein gutes Dutzend Motoren darauf, geweckt zu werden. Würde man alle die Teile hier zusammenbauen, entstünden ganze Autos daraus, nagelneue Käfer Cabrios.

Vor 60 Jahren rollte es zum ersten Mal auf die Straßen, 330.000 wurden gebaut, 1980 wurde die Produktion eingestellt.
