It's not everyday that one can say they've had the good fortune of reuniting with their high school sweetheart. As fate falls into play, each typically go their separate ways. It took 33 years, but for VW enthusiasts Jay McCord, fate has taken a turn. The uniting of old friends has, at long last, materialized.

Jay McCord
1963 Volkswagen Beetle

Don't let McCord fool you; he helped shape fate and played a large roll in the reunion of his high school steady, his coveted 1960 Convertible Beetle. Although not the exact '60 Vert in which McCord regularly cruised the boulevard, it is however, a very close reincarnation.

Craig Churcher
1965 Volkswagen Beetle

Everyone wants a Convertible; there's no question. For most of us, it's only the "wanting" part that we experience. We would all agree that owning our own Vert is a dream we would like to see realized.

California. Pacific. The very words conjure up a vision of cruising down PCH (Pacific Coast Highway), wind in your hair, the smell of salt air from the ocean and, of course, a Volkswagen to enjoy the ride in. And what better VW to do that in, than an early Beetle Convertible?

Gary Vogl
1964 Volkswagen Beetle

Gary Vogl, of Mission Viejo, Calif., has it made. Not only is he the owner of California Pacific/JBUGS, in Oceanside, he has the perfect car to take the "coast route" to work every day. What started out as a 1964 Convertible, found in rough shape from an advertisement in a local auto trader publication, has become this ultra-fine beach cruiser. What cost Gary $2200 to bring home, was a rough, rusty Vert that, pretty much, only Gary saw as the car of his dreams.

As an executive for the Acura branch of American Honda, Doug Danuser is probably a lot like most of us, with the one notable exception that part of his job puts him behind the wheel of some of the hottest new Hondas and Acuras on the market today (and in the near future). Despite that, he still chooses to run errands and putter around in the Super.

Doug Danuser
1972 Volkswagen Super Beetle

"I drive the Acuras during the week, and my wife Debby drives the VW. On Saturdays and Sundays, we switch." Doug's wife Debbie is an avid tennis player at their local country club, and on Fridays she plays on a league with the United States Tennis Association. Even with such posh surroundings and high-dollar Mercedes and BMWs at their disposal, her teammates always fight to see who gets to carpool in the "Bug."

It seems these days that more and more people would prefer life in the fast lane to anything else. From fast food to fast cars, patience it appears is no where to be found.

Louis and David Gall, of Woodward, Okla., make a pretty efficient father and son team when it comes to turning out vintage resto-custom Volkswagens. The last time their work was featured in VW Trends was in 1998 with a 1966 Type I covered in some crazy custom graphics ["One That Got Away," April 1998]. Approximately a year after that car went to print, the pair got to work on their next project, this 1962 Convertible.

Louis and David Gall
1962 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible - Rear Driver Side

The younger Gall, David, had his first VW experience with that wild blue '66, but his dad has a little more experience, spanning from 1961 when he purchased his very first Beetle, a Sedan. He really wanted a Convertible, but couldn't bring himself to buy one, reasoning that he could get one when he retired. If that isn't a serious display of willpower, I don't know what is.

It's been said before, but the Beetle's universal charm is nothing short of amazing. The car's appeal transcends boundaries across the board, both within the realms of automotive enthusiasm and without. You could be a dyed in the wool muscle-car fanatic, a classic car nut, a Japanese import freak or you could not like cars at all yet somewhere in the pit of your heart there's inevitably a soft spot for the VW Beetle.

Chopped, Dropped and Topless

As the popularity of vintage restoration continues to build, custom VWs of any year or model have become increasingly less common place. In most cases, fully customized VWs are more scarce than their vintage brethren.

Let's face it, most Cabriolet are going to need a new hood at some time in their lives and the chances are that the 'bargain' Cabrio you have just bought is going to need one sooner rather than later!

Cabrio Hood

All too often, when you take a look at any Cabriolet which is offered for sale at affordable price, the hood ressembles a corner of a rag'n'bone merchant's yard. Sunshine, vandalism, frost, wind, rain and pollution all conspire to turn an otherwise good-looking Cabrio into a sorry mess.

The Type 4 engine has long been overlooked by VW tuners, with the exception of the off-road racers in the USA and the hot-street brigade in Germany. Among the relatively few companies which specialize in Type 4 engines, FAT Performance is one of the best known and most experienced.

Type 4 Performance

When the 411 first appeared in 1968, the warmth of its reception was only a point or two above freezing - at least, as far as the tuning industry was concerned. With a degree of irony, Ron Fleming and Greg Aronson of FAT Performance in Orange, California, recall dismissing the Type 4 by giving it the nick-name of 'tuna-boat' (the car was so big and unwieldy, it rolled around like a tuna fishing boat in a swell). Little did they know that almost 30 years later, they would be heads of a business which specializes in race-preparing the Type 4 engine!

Of all the various engine conversions available to the Volkswagen owner in the 1950s, the Okrasa TSV-1300 was probably the best engineered.

Okrasa Conversion
Okrasa twin-Port heads required new cylinder head studs. Note also the shape of the inlet manifolds.

How's for the quotation? This is something which can happen to any of us at some time or other: a perfectly normal 1200 overtakes us and all our efforts to catch it are in vain. The other one is faster. And while we see from the speedo that our perfectly normal Volkswagen is certainly not threatening to fall ill with a fit of galloping consumption, but is devouring miles with unreduced speed, the other one, variantly challenging medium size cars, continuously increases its lead.

It goes without saying that, due to the rarity and desirability of both Hebmüller roadsters and early Karmann cabriolets, demand far outstrips supply. However, there is another factor that enters the equation: cost. Few enthusiasts could afford to buy an original Hebmüller, even if one did become available. The situation regarding very early cabrios is little better in that respect. Even cars built in the mid-1960s are becoming increasingly hard to find. So what is the answer?

The new Alternative
Chris & Kay Nihill of VeeDub Australia set up shop in 1987. They started by restoring Beetles and building hot rods, but soon decided to venture into replica business. Their Hebmüller replica looks particularly convincing, but would benefit from the fitting of round horn grilles, semaphore indicators and 16in wheels. However, the overall effect is rather stunning.

The decision to buy a Volkswagen cabriolet is an easy one to make, but deciding which cabriolet to buy is another matter altogether. There are many choice, to be made, and many things to take into consideration. And, of course, there is the matter of how much money you can afford to spend. However, if there is one universal rule that should not be broken, it is this: do not buy the first car you see. Mind you, having said that the author is the first to admit that it is very difficult not to let your heart rule your head (and wallet) when you first set eyes on one of these cars of your dreams.

It is all too easy to consider the start of the 1970s as being the beginning of the end of the cabriolet. Certainly as far as the traditional saloon models were concerned, the end was in sight, with production phasing out in Germany in 1978, but the cabriolet was destined to see the next decade begin, but only just.

1970s Cabriolet
In 1971, Volkswagen introduced the 1302 model range. The most noticeable difference compared with earlier models was the more bulbous nose. However, the flat windscreen remained for a further two years.

As far as the Karmann cabriolet was concerned, the new decade began with more of a whimper than a bang. Certainly sales were up, as was production, reaching a new high of 11,921 in 1960. But as for major design changes, there were none, Volkswagen restricting itself to the usual detail modifications that helped make the Beetle than ever.

1960s Cabriolet
The 1960 models were little different from the '50s. Note that the louvres in the engine lid are now horizontal. All cabriolet models from the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s came fitted with trim rings on the wheels.

With the demise of Hebmüller, the future of the cabriolet lay squarely in the hands of Wilhelm Karmann. The first production Karmann cabriolet had appeared in June 1949, soon to be joined by just over 360 others by the end of the year. There had been three earlier examples produced in 1948, but they cannot be considered anything other than prototypes.

1950s Model
This pre-production 1949 Karmann cabriolet displays a number of features that were not seen on production examples, including a Karmann badge on the left front quarter panel and large-logo hubcaps. Note that the semaphores are fitted in front of the door.

Jean & Nhu Mai

Streetscene, Paris in spring, almost 30° Celsius.
Although the 'Radcliffe Roadster' never itself saw production, it undoubtedly served to inspire a well-known coachbuilding concern to design, and ultimately build, its own 'push-me-pull-you' roadster. The company was Hebmüller, a name that had since fallen into Volkswagen lore.

High Hopes for Hebmüller
Contrary to popular belief, unlike the Radclyffe Roadster, the Hebmüller did not use a modified front bonnet as an engine lid. Instead, a whole new pressing was made which incorporated the faired-in licence plate light.

Having made the decision to build a cabriolet, Volkswagen felt that such specialist coachbuilding was not really a feasible proposition for the Wolfsburg factory to undertake. After all, the post-war production lines were struggling to keep up with demand as it was, without having to consider how best to modify acceptable cabriolet. the saloon model into an acceptable cabriolet.

Karmann Connection
Karmann always prided itself on the quality of its cabriolets, with all bodywork being finished by hand. Here a 1950s cabriolet is prepared ready for spraying.

A cool Cabrio pulls out into the traffic.

Into the Traffic

Whether on the street or the track, the Beetle is one of the most photogenic cars ever built.

As with many car projects, the evolution of Mark Bailey's stock '71 sedan to a tricked-out roadster has been long and sometimes painful. Mark bought the car in 1988, and soon after he decided that he could not live with a stocker and Cal-look was the only way to go.

Mark Bailey

So the car was taken to the Paintbox bodyshop, where some months later it reappeared as a slammed, lilac Cal-cooler. Mark ran the car like this for a few years before he suddenly got a yearning for a roadster.

It's all in the detail. A highly-polished engine uses innovative design and styling to set the car apart from the crowd, while a set of wild door panels reinforces the point the owner is trying to make.

Cal-looker

Employing these sorts of tricks can turn an impressive but average Cal-looker into a show stopping winner.

Baja racing is great to watch, and it also makes for one of the most photogenic of all VW events. Out in the desert, miles from anywhere, it's man and machine against the terrain and elements.

Baja

All you can do is prepare the car as well as possible, then go for broke. And if the car does really does' go for broke', then stand back and watch the rest race by...just like these guys are doing.

When a '65 Karmann Cabriolet cruises the streets, head are certain to turn, and no-one knows this more than Michael Barber from Stoke-on-Trent, in Staffordshire. His four-seater, Type 151 VW Cabriolet was manufactured on 2nd April 1965 and just four days later was sent out from the factory.

Michael Barber

Although it was built in left-hand-drive format, the rest of the vehicle was produced in British specification, for example including a mph speedometer and European bumpers.

Don Metz found the '68 Cabriolet in a sorry state in a backyard close to LAX. He towed the car back to his home and stripped it to the bare essentials, replacing whatever decaying bodywork he found as he went along.

Don Metz

The body was full dechromed in the Old School style, while a later 1970 decklid was fitted to provide extra cooling for the planned powerplant. Don wanted to smooth the car off as much as possible and hunted for a set of Euro bumpers with the turn signals located in the front bumper.

The restoration took 10 months, but it was worth the effort. Comments from on-lookers and highway salutes are gratifying.

It wasn't exactly a peach when he bought it, but long time VW restorer, Dick Christensen saw immense potential for this rare '52 convertible picked up from Bob Everts.

Do not need to have so much color to have a beautiful engine, a little touches of chrome are welcome!

Touches of Chrome

In 1954, the engine was enlarged to 1192cc, producing 30bhp at 3400rpm.

Fire Extinguisher

The accessory fire extinguisher has not been mounted in the best place if the engine catches fire!

Mechanically, the Karmann cabriolets were always identical to their saloon counterparts.

1131cc Engine

In the early 1950s, that meant an 1131cc engine which produced 25bhp at just 3300rpm such as this.
An enlarged 1192cc version, with 30bhp, was used from 1954 through to the end of the decade.

Look carefully at this engine. Look after the turbo.

Turbo

Oh yeah, it's just behind the turbine.

To match the rest of the car, this engine, with a pared down look, is a brand new 1641.

Here, as elsewhere, the finish is perfect.

No comment! It's just for racing!

Racing

It is almost impossible to think of any other kind of car that commands this level of skill and dedication, and produces such an amazing array of engine styles.

Racing

And whether they are street, show or race engines, the attention to detail is mind numbing.

When faced with perfection like this, all you can do is take a step back and simply admire the incredible amount of work and imagination that goes into building such beautiful machines.

Reuters artwork has become collectable in recent years. Dating back to May 1954, this brochure extolled the virtues of the cabriolet, suggesting that it was sporting yet practical. It was certainly practical with its four seats and reliable engine, but sporting? Hmmmm. Although Reuters artwork was often very stylised, it was also accurate in detail. Note, for example, the swivelling rear view mirror.

He now works in Portland, Oregon (still for Siemens) and FINALLY bought his Beetle. A well-kept 1966 which he found in the L.A Times but which happened to be in Portland.

Trinh has always loved volkswagen. His first car was a 73 super beetle. It got him through 4 yrs of college without much trouble. Even then he wanted a convertible karmann ghia but could never afford it. Finally after college, he sold the beetle and got him a japanese car when he attended dental school. As years go by, he has had a lot of cars. One of his latest car was a 95 porsche 993 cab. He had that car for a year. But being practical, wanting to drive something everyday and be able to know the car mechanism my yearning for the old volkswagen started to come back. He started to web browse and read with what people were doing with their volkswagen convertible. So he sold the porsche. Bought him a 62 karmann ghia convertible, and recently a 79 super beetle convertible. As of now, the karmann ghia is undergoing the interior and paint.

Here is his 79 super beetle. He recently lowered the car, changed the ball joint to get rid of that shimmy. Got 4 polished Empi's style wheels. Besides that, he hasn't done much. The car still has its air conditioner, and still works. Maybe in a year, he will get it repainted since the paint is getting dings and a little scratches.
